The Constant Companion: Yellow-rumped Warbler
In the Bay Area, we are very lucky to have the Yellow-rumped Warbler as a year-round companion. Whether they flit through oaks in Fremont or forage along the shoreline, they are always present. Specifically, local photographers often call these birds “Butter-butts.” This nickname makes them a very charismatic subject for any nature gallery. Consequently, I find myself pointing my lens at them during every season.
The Challenge of Small Bird Photography
Capturing these tiny birds requires immense patience and a very fast shutter finger. They rarely sit still for more than a single second. Therefore, they serve as the ultimate test for any modern autofocus system. For example, their erratic movements can be quite difficult to track. As a result, a photographer must remain focused and ready at all times. I recently spent many hours tracking their frantic energy in the field.
Technical Setup and the 840mm Advantage
I used a very specific technical setup to capture the images in this gallery. Specifically, these shots were taken using the Sony A7V and the Sony A9II. I paired these high-performance bodies with the Sony 200-600mm lens. Furthermore, I added a 1.4x extender to the kit. This combination provides a massive 840mm advantage for wildlife work. Thus, I can fill the frame without encroaching on the bird’s personal space.
Documenting Intricate Details
This extra reach is essential for capturing natural behavior in the wild. In addition, it allows for tack-sharp detail on every intricate feather. These warblers look different depending on the time of year. For instance, they show subtle tones during the winter months. However, they display bold and bright colors during the breeding season. In my opinion, there is never a bad time to photograph these resilient birds.
Two Years in the Field
I have carefully curated my favorite frames from the past two years of shooting. These photos showcase the distinct personality of this species. Moreover, they represent many early mornings spent along the local California trails. I hope these images highlight the beauty of our local ecosystems. Finally, thank you for viewing my latest work and following my birding journey.
