Read MoreThere is a quiet magic in the pre-dawn stillness of a Northern California marsh. For a bird photographer, the joy begins long before the shutter clicks; it starts with the rhythm of the wind through the tules and the profound connection to nature that only comes from slowing down to truly see. Avian Snaps is a digital record of those moments, dedicated to capturing the character and dignity of our avian neighbors.
The heart of this portfolio is rooted in the San Francisco Bay Area. From the golden foothills of the East Bay regional parks to the coastal wetlands of the peninsula, this region serves as a spectacular theater for wildlife. Whether it is the striking blue of a Lazuli Bunting on a summer thistle or the ancient, rattling call of Sandhill Cranes over the valley, these galleries focus on the vibrant species that call Northern California home.
While the local landscape is my primary canvas, you will find images from other states and countries “peppered in” throughout the site. These entries provide a broader look at the migratory patterns and diverse habitats that connect our local birds to the rest of the world. Each photograph is an attempt to document intricate behaviors—the texture of a feather or the intensity of a territorial display—made possible by the precision of a high-reach Sony mirrorless system.
This website is an invitation to look closer. Photography has a unique way of turning a common species into a masterpiece and a rare sighting into a permanent memory. As you browse these field notes and photo essays, I hope you feel the same thrill I do when spotting a flash of color in the brush or finally identifying a distant song. Thank you for visiting and sharing in the beauty of the trail.
