The Spark of Inspiration

The electric blue color of a male Lazuli Bunting is truly captivating. Specifically, my fascination began while watching a photographer’s vlog on YouTube. I was immediately hooked by their stunning appearance. Therefore, I knew I had to experience that color through my own lens. This pursuit became a primary goal for my bird photography.

A Seasonal Gift to the Region

Living in Northern California provides a wonderful advantage for birders. We are fortunate to live right in the middle of their migration path. Consequently, these gemstone-colored visitors arrive every late spring and early summer. During this time, they fill our local hills with vibrant color and song. Moreover, their arrival marks one of my favorite times of the year.

Scouting the Bay Area Lazuli Bunting

Finding a Bay Area Lazuli Bunting requires both patience and dedicated scouting. Over the last few years, I have spent many hours searching for them. I have now developed a rotation of reliable local spots. These locations rarely disappoint during the peak of the season. Between 2023 and 2025, I captured many special moments in the field. As a result, I have curated a large collection of my favorite shots.

Premier South Bay Birding Locations

I captured these images at some of the best birding locations in the South Bay. Each park offers a unique habitat for these beautiful birds. For instance, the thistle patches at these sites are very popular. Specifically, I visited the following regional parks for my photography:

  • Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve in Cupertino.

  • Joseph D. Grant County Park in San Jose.

  • Santa Teresa County Park also located in San Jose.

  • Ed R. Levin County Park in Milpitas.

Sharing the Experience

Each location provided a different light and background for the birds. Thus, I was able to document a variety of behaviors and poses. I truly enjoyed the process of tracking these colorful visitors. Furthermore, watching them interact with their environment is a rewarding experience. I hope you enjoy viewing these photos as much as I enjoyed taking them.
